Last July, Dylan Klapmeier wrote a post for the Grizzly Phi Blog detailing the work of Montana Alpha Phi Delts in politics. A lot has happened in the short eight months since then.
With the help of Montana Alpha alumni Dylan Klapmeier and Kyle Schmauch, Steve Daines handily won election to the U.S. Senate. Daines made history by being the first Republican elected to that Senate seat in over 100 years.
In his role with the Montana Republican Party’s “Engagement Team,” Klapmeier also helped numerous other candidates win election. He is now working as a field representative in Senator Daines’ Missoula office.
Schmauch, meanwhile, has teamed up with Daniel Zolnikov, a young state representative from Billings and University of Montana alumnus. Schmauch works on constituent services and communications for Zolnikov and is helping drive engagement on digital privacy and other issues important to young Montanans.
Every young Democrat legislative candidate that the Big Sky Democrats supported won his or her election. Montana Alpha alumnus Jeff Edmunds is a regional director for the organization and helped organize a successful, bipartisan “Vote and Float” rafting and fishing trip on the Yellowstone River during the election.
Brother Mike Hopkins unfortunately did not win his election to the Legislature, but he is now representing the entire Montana University System as the Montana Associated Students lobbyist. Montana Alpha alumnus Bill Johnston serves as the University of Montana’s lobbyist.
Brothers Asa Hohman and Sean McQuillan are also heavily involved in the 64th Montana legislative session in their respective roles as president and VP of the Associated Students of the University of Montana.
Because Montana has such a small population, there are a lot of opportunities for students to get involved and make a real difference in politics. With the help of their leadership experiences in Phi Delta Theta, many of our members are taking their involvement to the next level.

P.S. Congrats to Dylan Klapmeier on his engagement shortly after the election! His fiancé is Alexandria Valdez of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
